I have had the pleasure of knowing and training with Aaron for 10 years and throughout those 10 years Aaron has unselfishly shared his knowledge of Jiu Jitsu with myself and everyone else at our academy.

I have been a Police officer for 23 ears and I can not tell you how many times Aaron has helped me modify certain aspects of my Jiu Jitsu game to fit within the strict parameters of law enforcement. The Jiu Jitsu lessons Aaron has taught me are indispensable for dealing with situations that required the use of force, yet always mindful of preventing necessary force from becoming excessive.

Some time in early 2006, I started hearing about this amazing new purple belt guy from California that was taking classes in the morning. A couple of months later I finally got to roll with Aaron. He was as good as the hype. He has a great all around game. I have seen Aaron compete at the highest level and do very well.

Aaron is a very gifted Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner, but more importantly for anyone looking for a school to train in, he is a great teacher. He is very good as passing on his deep understanding of grappling technique and the concepts behind them.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art. You need an experienced sensei (literally translated as “person born before”) to help you see the order in the complexity.

The best instructors do more than show a random move of the day (you can learn random moves on youtube). Great teachers set the tone of the dojo. They create a distraction-free oasis in a noisy world that is a safe, fun, and open workshop where people of all ages and backgrounds can work together to improve themselves and each other. Aaron’s gym is just that kind of oasis.

Aaron is a top guy from the Renzo Gracie Academy NYC, a black belt under Renzo Gracie and John Danaher. I have trained with Aaron Milam for over 6 years, and his insight as a coach and training partner played a big part in me winning my purple belt division at the 2011 Pan Ams.

One thing I really appreciate about Aaron is his openness to creativity. You will be given solid fundamentals and you will learn tried an true techniques. But, he is open to new ideas and always evolving, and not stuck in a rigid set of techniques (if you want proof, just ask Aaron about leg locks).

Training BJJ under Aaron Milam has been an extremely powerful and productive experience. The time I have invested in commuting from Long Island to Manhattan is a small price to pay for the rare opportunity to train with someone who not only has reached an extremely high level of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but who also has the intelligence, patience, and conceptual understanding to impart that knowledge on to his students.

The instructors and students are skilled, hardworking, and very friendly. The atmosphere on the mat reflects the students desire to improve the level of everyone training at the academy. By training here, you will not only become a quality martial arts athlete, you will also enjoy your time working with a great group of people.

Aaron is a phenomenal coach as well as BJJ practitioner. I had the chance to learn and train with him and gained lots of knowledge. Gi or No Gi he will be able to take your game to the next level.

I have had the misfortune and pleasure of being both a training partner (hence, misfortune) as well as student (hence pleasure) of Aaron Milams. Aaron has the rare distinction of being both an elite level grappler as well as a natural teacher. Initially he will sit against the mat and observe you roll; without comment he will identify the holes in your game, then without pretense Aaron will politely ask your opponent to step aside, look you in the eyes, slap hands, and proceed to thoroughly dominate you like a cat swatting at a staggering rodent. This is when the teaching begins. Articulate and methodical, Aaron has a very tactile and intuitive teaching style – I often find that our interests are aligned; he is your teacher but remains a lifelong student. Aaron doesn’t dictate or lecture, but rather, works through the problems with you. Our private lessons are often situational. Often, in various positions Aaron will stop, close his eyes, feel out your base of support, pause again, open his eyes, and begin working through the various alternatives of your problem set. We will then drill the solutions, write down our findings, and hypothesize for the next session. This is bespoke instruction at its best.

I’ve had the privilege of training under Aaron for a few years. Not only is he an amazing practitioner, he has a rare gift of being able to teach techniques that anyone can understand. He gives thoughtful answers to questions based on a student’s size, strength, and build. Students walk away with confidence in the technique.

For me, one of Aaron’s most valuable traits as a teacher is how he motivates you to challenge yourself no matter what skill level or gender you are. Although he keeps an eye on safety, he encourages you to fight your own battles and is generous with his advice afterward. His personality makes it easy for him to connect with all different types of people. He is an eternal student himself, constantly curious and searching for ways to make his techniques more efficient. He inspires this in his students as well.

Aaron comes from a line of high quality instructors. He takes his responsibility as a teacher seriously. There is no pretense. He cares about his students development and wants to share his love and respect for BJJ. I feel incredibly fortunate to have his instruction and guidance. He has greatly impacted my life on and off the mat.
